MACC agrees to produce the Columbia Festival of the Arts’ LakeFest for the first time.

MACC launched its first in-school arts residency with The Reminders.
MACC expanded its Howard County Public School System’s partnership, hosting the Howard County Youth Orchestra with Guster.

The Howard County Library System brought Battle of the Books’ Middle School Trivia Competition to Merriweather for the
first time.

MACC partnered with the Howard Hughes Corporation to host free concerts at
Color Burst Park in the Merriweather District.

Merriweather is closed for the first season in 53 years due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Construction of Merriweather’s new SkyBoxes and SkyLawns are completed.

January 13, 2018

The Frank Gehry-designed roof of Merriweather Post Pavilion collapsed during a construction accident. Portions of the original fascia are salvaged and re-used.

MACC acquired Merriweather Post Pavilion from the Howard Hughes Corporation.

A full scale renovation project of
Merriweather Post Pavilion begins.

The Merriweather Arts and Culture Center is founded as the Downtown Columbia Arts and Culture Commission.

The Downtown Columbia Master Plan is approved, and it envisions a revitalized Merriweather as the cultural centerpiece of a new, vibrant downtown.

2010

Merriweather’s owners, the Rouse Company, agree to keep the venue open and to
plan for renovations.

Merriweather welcomes a new promoter, IMP, who brings in more and bigger artists.

The “Save Merriweather” campaign was launched, growing into a community-wide effort to prevent the venue’s closure.

The first Columbia Festival of the Arts was held, establishing a new cultural tradition.

The Grateful Dead performed multiple shows at Merriweather, attracting large, devoted crowds that are still talked about in Columbia 40 years later.

President Jimmy Carter attended a Willie Nelson concert at Merriweather and joined him on stage for a duet of “Georgia on
My Mind.”

Jackson Browne records “Running on Empty” at Merriweather Post Pavilion.

1970

The Who and Led Zeppelin shared the stage at Merriweather, marking the only time these two iconic bands performed together.

Lake Kittamaqundi was created by th eRouse Company.

First residents of Columbia move in.

Merriweather opens as the summer home
for the National Symphony Orchestra
on July 14th.
